Thrift Store Makeover: Message Board

Turn a thrift store find into a fun message board makeover!
I walked into the thrift store with a purpose: find a piece I could makeover into something practical for our family.  At any given moment I have 3 or 4 projects in progress, but that doesn't stop me from looking out for future projects, especially when I go to the thrift store. *wink*  I picked up one piece in particular that I thought was kind of ugly, but looked a little closer and found that it had some really great features and I knew what I wanted to do with it: a mini message board.

The entrance to our garage is through our laundry room, which means we end up dropping a lot of things in there that don't really belong.  Because it's how we enter and exit our house 90% of the time, it's also a good place to leave reminders or notes and have a place to leave our keys.  The piece I found had a small cork board and a place for a picture with two hooks at the bottom, however, the color was all the same boring brown.  Thankfully, it wasn't anything a little paint couldn't fix.

As I was getting ready to paint, I noticed that there was a little separation on the top right side so I grabbed some super glue (I used this brand) and glued it together and then borrowed my husband's clamps to hold it all together.  A few hours later and I was ready to paint.

The back of the message board has tabs over each of the sections which makes them super easy to remove and I didn't have to tape off anything (#winning).  I did two coats of white chalk paint, but oddly enough it didn't cover the brown like I thought so I did two more coats of white acrylic paint to finish it off.

For the cork board, I painted it a turquoise/teal color with some acrylic paint.  I have this color scattered throughout my house (here and here) so this was a good way to tie it in and add a pop of color in my laundry room.  I added a button and a mini clothespin to a couple of push pins using some super glue that we can use to leave notes.

The space above the picture looks kind of like wicker, which I don't love, but I liked the texture it added so I decided to spray paint it the same gray color as the two hooks at the bottom which tied it all together really well.  (I used Rustoleum Granite in a satin finish.)

*TIP: Screw the hooks into a piece of cardboard so they don't move when you spray paint them.  This way you also spray the tops of the screws so they aren't a different color than the hooks.

Screw hooks into a piece of cardboard before you spray them to keep them from moving around.

I printed off a fun picture of our family from Valentine's Day this year and popped it in the frame, then I hung it on the wall next to our garage door.

What do you think?  Could you see something like this in your home?  I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that it will prevent lost keys. *wink*
