Kids Night In Box: Mind Your Manners

As a parent, teaching my kids to be thoughtful, kind and respectful of others is important to me.  Something we've worked on from a young age is manners, such as saying please and thank you, waiting their turn to talk and not chewing with their mouth open.  But sometimes it feels like the things I say go in one ear and out the other.  That's why I'm thankful for the different resources available to help me teach them.  Having the lesson come from someone (or something) other than me can create an environment where my kids are more willing to listen.

This month's Kids Night In Box was themed Mind Your Manners.  As with the other Kids Night In Boxes, we started out with a book which is a fun way to introduce the theme.  The book was called Mind Your Manners, B.B. Wolf and tells about the infamous Big Bad Wolf who gets invited to a tea party.  He has to review his manners and creates a little rhyme to help him remember: "Sip your tea and never slurp.  Say 'excuse me' if you burp."  My kids really liked the book, especially since it has characters in it they are familiar with (Little Red Riding Hood, Bo Peep, etc).

Next, we made little napkin holders using pipe cleaners and pony beads.  My kids love stringing beads so this was a great activity for them.

Afterwards, they were able to decorate the inserts on their dinner cups and coloring their placemat.  Again, my kids love coloring and they liked using the new coloring pencils that came in the box.  Between these two activities, they spent about 30 minutes.

Then I handed out the paper plate and plastic silverware that were also included in our box and they learned how to properly set the table.  We played a little game where I took away the placemat and then used a spinner card (included) to quiz them and see if they could remember where everything went.  I was impressed that they got everything right!

Lastly, I put a cookie on their plate and told them to go choose from their dress up bin for some "fancy" clothes to wear to their own tea party.  My son was a Super Cowboy and my daughter was a Fairy Princess.  While they ate their cookies, we talked a little more about table manners.

In all, they had a fun time learning more about manners.  While this wasn't one of my personal favorite Kids Night In Boxes, my kids enjoyed it a lot and that's the part that really matters.  My kids look forward to getting their very own box in the mail and I love that they learn something while having fun.
