Halloween Popcorn Box Party 2017 + Marshmallow Popcorn

I will be the first to admit that Halloween is not my favorite holiday.  I could easily do without the stressing about costumes, buying treats for kids I don't know and scary, creepy things that pop up (sometimes literally) this time of year.  Maybe it goes back to the year my dad took me to the neighbor's "spook alley" which completely freaked me out and gave me nightmares and which I still remember to this day over 20 years later, thank you very much.  But give me pumpkins and cute witches and I'll be content to make my way through another Halloween season.  *wink*

This year though, I've joined in the Halloween Popcorn Box Party hosted by Laura over at Me and My INKlings and I got to try my hand at transforming an ordinary popcorn box into anything I wanted.  After doing some thinking, I decided on a little witch (see, I told you I like witches).  I sketched out a few ideas and this is what I came up with: a headless witch, complete with tutu, striped stockings and black cat.  My husband and sister asked me why there wasn't a head, but my daughter (age 5) kept exclaiming about "how cute the witch is, mama!"  I think I'll go with her feedback...

The popcorn box was provided by World Market but the rest of the materials were ones that I had on hand.  If you'd like to make your own little popcorn box witch, here's what you'll need:

I didn't create a tutorial for the witch, but it is pretty straightforward.  I cut the shoes and cat out with my Silhouette Cameo, used washi tape for the legs and drew and cut the shirt out freehand.  The tutu is made with black tulle, cut into strips and tied around elastic cording.

However, I am including a recipe for the popcorn I made to fill my little witch box.  I'm calling it Marshmallow Popcorn, but I almost named it Rice Krispie Popcorn because that's what it tastes like to me.

Here's what you'll need to make it:

  • 8 c. popcorn (no butter)
  • 6 c. mini marshmallows
  • 6 Tbsp. butter
  • sprinkles (optional)

First, pop the popcorn.  (I have a simple hot air popper like this that works great.)  Put it in a large bowl and set aside.

Next, melt the butter and marshmallows in a medium pan over medium heat, stirring until smooth.  Don't keep it on for any longer than you need to, otherwise you risk browning or burning the butter.

Immediately pour over the popcorn and stir until evenly coated and then sprinkle with sprinkles.  Let cool.  Store in an airtight container.

The thing I love about this is that you can make this popcorn festive for any holiday or celebration by the sprinkles you use.  You could even add a little food coloring to the marshmallow/butter mixture before pouring it over the popcorn.
